Idea pitch

Because in Râmnicu Vâlcea there is no functional space for young people, in 2019 the AIDE association opened the first space for young people where they can meet and attend to different workshops.
In order to reach young people from all social categories, from 2021 we want to connect people in the community through a permanent program with social, civic and educational development activities for young people from disadvantaged situations in the city of Ramnicu Vâlcea.

Where will your project idea take place?

Ramnicu Valcea city, Oltenia region, South-West of Romania

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

In the eyes of the authorities from Valcea County, the youth sector has no priority, reason for which there is no youth strategy for youth in our county and the pandemic caused by COVID-19 has deepened the educational gap between vulnerable young people and other young people.
One of the challenges that young people face is the lack of a free space in which to connect with other young people, to learn democratic tools, to learn how to write a project, to have a psychologist to discuss about their challenges and to learn English.
In our city there is no place where young people can attend to regular program with educational activities coordinated by a Youth Worker.
The city doesn't provide cultural diversity, so the contact with international volunteers is useful for their development

Who are you doing it for?

The target group for this project represents young people aged between 13 and 30 from Valcea County, with a focus on young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.
From 2019 until now we have hosted over 500 young people from Valcea County in various activities, events and courses.
Our main focus is to have a regular program of educational activities for a number of 50 children and young people from disadvantaged environments of our city (low financial situation, learning difficulties, young people of Roma ethnicity, rural areas).
In addition to the regular program, we want to involve over 150 young people in the workshops offered by local trainers, over 100 young people in informal meetings of youth organizations.

How do you plan to get there?

Through this project we want to offer a safe place for young people in Valcea County from all the social classes.
For proper coordination, we will hire a Youth Worker to coordinate activities at the Center and for the project management. For the visibility of the activities, the marketing specialist will make weekly posts with the activity of the space during the project.
OCT- we will create the 5 groups of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds for permanent activities, the association has a partnership with institutions of social care and we will ask for the parents if they want to join it. The program of the groups will be according to the school schedule of the young people. The activities will be weekly during the project and will be carried out by international volunteers hosted through the European Solidarity Corps program.
NOV-A trainer will start workshops on active participation, project writing, community organizing and community journalism.
DEC. The psychologist will start the emotional support workshops for teenagers. It will have a fixed schedule of two hours per week. The program will be displayed online and offline so that all young people know the time interval.
JAN-A trainer will start digital skills and graphic design courses. Each course will have 10 sessions and the timetable of the courses will be according the free time of the young people.

What are the expected results?

Keeping the Center open for as long as possible is the only way in which approximately 500 young people interact annually through informal meetings and various workshops conducted by international volunteers and local trainers.
Through the permanent program, the 50 young people with fewer opportunities will have a higher level of English communication, will be more open to cultural diversity and will have a higher self-esteem in becoming active people in the community.
Through democratic workshops, young people will be active in dealing with the authorities, empathetic with community issues and open to collaboration with other organizations for the common good.
Permanent meetings with the psychologist will have a beneficial effect on the harmonious development of young people.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The center was opened in 2019 as a space for interaction between young people in the community and access to personal and civic development activities.
Through the regular activities program offered to the 50 young people, we make sure that the next generation has more confidence in their own strengths, is more open to diversity and communicates more easily in English.
Active participation workshops are tools for young people to learn about their role in the community, their rights and responsibilities, how they can contribute to society.
Beside the educational program we offer a safe socialization space for youth organizations in Vâlcea County where young people can plan and design project with impact in the community.

Why is this idea important to you?

In order to have a generation of active young people, we collaborate with competent people to mobilize young people and give them confidence in their own strengths.
In the coordination of the Center will be the manager of the AIDE association. He is in this position since 2019 and through the project with international volunteers he knows the young people in the community.
The trainer in this project has been a collaborator of the association for 3 years. He is a Certified Senior Peer Trainer and has experience working with young people since 2012 as a trainer and coordinator in international mobility.
For visibility and graphic design courses, we have a person with 10 years of experience in graphic design and marketing, he brought a great visual contribution to the projects so far.
