Idea pitch

"Think globally - act locally" is a set of creative activities addressed to young people at risk of social exclusion. The project is based on innovative cultural activities carried out by an international group of volunteers, based on the theme of global problems. Project activities are aimed at changing attitudes of intolerance towards multiculturalism and ethnic diversity of the region, and the choice of themes and methods is dictated by the specificity and real needs of the recipient group.

Where will your project idea take place?

North-East Poland:
Różanystok,
Sokołów Podlaski
Dąbrowa Białostocka and others.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Podlasie is a land that for centuries has fully served as a political borderland as well as a national-denominational and socio-cultural border. Ethnic communities live here, that strongly interpenetrate and interact, which creates a contemporary mosaic of nationalities and religions. The region is subject to a growing lack of tolerance among young people, mostly from families with dysfunctional: dominated by multi-generational unemployment, aggression, addictions and other social pathologies. The lack of tolerance for difference is mostly among young people recognized as socially excluded. This is the main problem that we want to answer in our project in the form of global education activities aimed at tolerance and estimation for diversity among people exposed to social exclusion.

Who are you doing it for?

The recipients of the project are socially excluded people or young people exposed to social exclusion, mainly young people between 11 and 19 years old, coming from various environments, including socially dysfunctional families. The beneficiaries are mainly boys staying in special educational and sociotherapeutic centers, schools, including schools with integration departments, orphanages and other educational institutions. All institutions and people covered by the activities live in the Podlasie Voivodship, mainly in small towns (over 50% participants are from rural areas).
This is a group on which the foundation's activities are focused every day and covered by the needs analysis and diagnosis of youth problems carried out by organizations in the years 2017-2019.

How do you plan to get there?

The most important is to understand that the use of global issues in innovative methods of artistic expression is a tool for shaping the correct social attitudes of people exposed to exclusion in a multicultural region, where for several years the attitude of intolerance towards otherness has been growing. In order to implement our idea we’ve planned a structured programme with concrete steps, activities and tools to be used.
1. Creating an online platform.
2. Preparation of the schedule of visits of artistic groups to selected institutions
3. Establishing cooperation with public entities
4. Implementation of artistic activities: workshops conducted by a group of volunteers
5. Research and evaluation
6. Dissemination of results
7. Media publications and summary of pilot activities

What are the expected results?

"Drop drills Rock". For us, every success in the project will be a change made in individual customers. In our activities, we work with a very difficult recipient: young people, which society stigmatizes by the fact that boys stay in special educational centers on a daily basis. Our goal is a change made in them, but also in the immediate local environment and region. Properly shaping the social attitudes of these people, based on interesting educational forms and based on a very important topic, swear change in boys. The change made in each of them is a step of social change, which is necessary in our region.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The idea of the project is to create an international group of volunteers from around the world, representing various artistic forms, through which will present the problems of the global world, based on diversity, mutual respect and tolerance. The group will reach young people (mainly exposed to social exclusion) through art and various forms of artistic expression. Creating a permanent cooperation platform based on the problems of the global world and their transfer to local communities. We believe that socially vulnerable people have social potential, and our goal is to discover and polish it to strengthen the social roles of young people. It is especially important for us to build tolerance for the world among socially marginalized people.

Why is this idea important to you?

When we started working for socially excluded people, we tried to provide them with what was important in our opinion: education, professional skills. We gave them psychological help. At the time, we thought we were shaping them. After a short time, we began to see the general problem. We studied their environment, social attitude and beliefs. It turned out that in the dimension of the entire local community, they are not people with bad attitudes towards socially excluded people. The boys themselves are negative about those who are different. That is why we decided to adopt an attractive educational form (culture and art) with which we want to shape their proper social attitudes. This will give them a chance to return to society after leaving the center, but as a valuable citizen.
