Idea pitch

Interactive theatre education and workshops that through exercise and improvisation leads to the implementing gender mainstreaming. Through various theater and stage educations, a solution can be found for strengthening the democratic culture of living in diversity and developing tolerance towards different points of view, reducing the polarization and determination of society in the area of the City of Ogulin. The target group is the population of the City of Ogulin.

Where will your project idea take place?

City of Ogulin, Karlovac County, Republic of Croatia, online

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The Gender Equality Act states that local and regional self-government units in the Republic of Croatia are obliged to assess and evaluate the effects of that decision or action on the position of women or men in all phases of planning, adoption and implementation of a decision or action, in order to achieve real equality. women and men. They are also required to implement gender equality training programs for their employees. In short, they need to implement a gender mainstreaming policy. But in general, there is a significant lack of understanding of what this actually means and how to create gender-sensitive policies. For this reason, it is necessary to implement the Theater of Change program, which will result in gender-aware participants .

Who are you doing it for?

The Theatre of Change program promotes the active participation of citizens, especially women and young people, in decision-making processes, as well as the responsible creation and implementation of public policies that will take into account the gender perspective. The program will develop analyzes and recommendations for improving the protection of women's rights, as well as analyzes and recommendations for civic and political participation of women and youth, participants will participate in working groups and bodies through which public policies are created. Trainings will be conducted with the aim of improving skills and empowering target groups - especially women who are not engaged in the local community.

How do you plan to get there?

Starting from the idea of strengthening and strengthening the role of theater as an art that has the power of social change, Theater of Change shifts the emphasis from spectacle theater, a finished product to be shown to spectators, to rehearsal theater, to a place where the spectator actively participates in determining the dramatic event. The goal is to turn people - spectators, passive observers within the theatrical phenomenon, into subjects, active participants, actors-changers of what is happening in front of them. In the trainings and workshops of the Theater of Change, the methods of Picture Theater and Forum Theater and Techniques Legislative Theater, Direct Action, Invisible Theater, Theater of Newspapers and Long Wish will be used.

What are the expected results?

The implementation of the Theater of Change program will result in the analysis of the problem of gender awareness, defined goals at the level of the City of Ogulin, determining the method of realization of goals. Methods are measures that local self-government will take to achieve the set goals. They will consist of different types of activities, given that these are complex social problems, so it is often necessary to act on several levels with different measures. For example, the local community will influence the funding of extracurricular programs needed to achieve the goal of gender awareness. The program will educate at least 100 people belonging to the target group, of which at least 30 will continue to participate in the program.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The Theatre of Change will use the world-wide models of cultural confrontations with the interactive theater of August Boal, a method that originated in Brazil in the second half of the 20th century. Theater theorists have used the term Theater of the Oppressed for this type of dramatic workforce because it takes as its base the truth and real stories of people who have encountered life's injustices and have dramaturgically transformed them into short and dynamic stage awards. Afterwards, workshop participants will play around with various possible variants of the same event, adding to the film Akira Kurosawa Rashamon. Under the expert guidance of workshop leaders, participants will try to find the key and principle of action through which tolerance can be applied in different life situati

Why is this idea important to you?
