Time feels like an inescapable measure for those whose lives are ruled by the rat race, caught up in the relentless pace of the modern city. But in the mountains, time is suspended, almost imperceptible. «In the mountains, human time is not cal-culated».
"The Mountain of Suspended Time" is an artistic project with two results: a live performance with video, music and an action of an actor and a creative documentary.
Mountain communities of the Dolomites (Trento - Italy)
Mountain communities of Rila (Bulgaria)
Through the processes related to globalization, with the expansion of our cognitive coordinates and the disruption of the Aristotelian categories of time and space, we are witnessing a deterritorialization of the ego. Mountain communities are more closed mainly because they have developed a strong sense of community and belonging. We want, through an artistic process, to highlight the importance of this sense of common belonging that binds two mountain communities placed in two geographically distant places.
We want to highlight this potential as a model of a different life by affirming the sense of identity of two communities both far from globalized models but so close each other for life style. The live performance the creative documentary will be a the result of a research of "memories" of the two communities, the two "far but close" communities that will be involved in this artistic process and they will share the experience. We will also use for our project video sequences of the past taken from the from the movie repertoire spanning from the cinema origins until the 1950s or local archives, putting them in relation with video sequences that we will shoot "today" in those two communities.
The project is based on the assembly of video sequences that revolve around the symbolic value of the mountain. The media will be selected from the film repertoire of the communities involved ranging from the origins of cinema until the 1950s.
These images will be joined by cinematographic sequences shot on in our days. The soundtrack for the images will be composed basing on traditional musical themes of the two communities to arrive to a common aesthetic sense. The organization and evolution of the film material and the live soundtrack will be accompanied by the actions of a performer, aiming to achieve a dramaturgic line prioritizing the synergic relationship between images, music, poetic words and body actions. For the project we need a reserch involving the whole two communities.
Basically we want to work in strict contact with the two communities involved, in the Dolomites in province of Trento in Italy and on the Rila mountain in Bulgaria as well, spending a time on the place to collect memories and video and music materials. After that a time to organize the collected materials in a common artistic experience
We will have two "products" of the project, both coming out from this experience with people living the two communities:
1) a live performance with music, theatre and video. If possible we will try to involve people of the communities on the stage, with the idea to perform in Italy and Bulgaria as well
2) a documentary that will be built with images shot in our days in the territory of the two communities which will be accompanied by images of their past
The local communities involved in the project will be strengthened through a process of artistic self-esteem, affirming their uniqueness. They will have a mirror in a different part of Europe. They will have a mirror in a different part of Europe, becoming aware that the sense of belonging to a territory, the mountain, crosses every national border.
For all the others who will be part of our project we hope that this is a small drop for a new way of thinking about art and life in this Europe.
Art and democracy are expressions of humanity closely connected to each other. Art has accompanied man since prehistoric times. The cultures that have followed over the centuries have produced an artistic heritage that was a representation of its community and its founding values. We believe that peripheral communities should not be excluded from this process.
We believe in art as form of popular participation.
