Idea

Idea pitch

We started to work with disadvantaged children first in Tomor in 2010 and from that time, we still bringing the taboo breaking performances closer not only to youngsters, but to adults as well. We play and talk about prostitution, drug addiction, children rights, etc. With our new idea through the Theatre of Oppressed we want to reach regions and closed communities, which are leaving in disadvantaged situations and raising awareness of topics, such as domestic violence.

Where will your project idea take place?

We want to work within the ten poorest regions of Europe, in Hungary: Berettyóújfalu, Tomor etc.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Poverty, drug addiction, social exclusion, domestic violence, prostitution, gaps in educational system.

Who are you doing it for?

Our target group will be the people who are experiencing oppressed situations and exclusion. In the bigger cities the alternative theatre methods such as forum theatre and drama pedagogy are present, but not in the poor regions. Even that they have a bigger need, because the communities usually have a lot of taboo topics: such as domestic violence, drug addiction, etc. Usually youngsters are avoiding the educational systems, and the rate of unemployment is very high there.
By our project, we will encourage the people to speak up about the problems, experience active citizenship, take steps.
This communities usually very closed, but as our team has experience in non formal education in national and international level, we know the methods of smooth involvement, arousal of interests.

How do you plan to get there?

METHODOLOGY - The methodological frame will be based on non-formal educational methods, using mainly drama pedagogical methods and forum theatre methodology. The participants will gain new skills in creating art, performance products by the method of “learning-by-doing”.
RESULTS AND IMPACTS - We expected:
- a personal/professional growth for the participants,
- active citizenship
- a stronger motivation for them to participate and cooperate in teamwork and speak up, take steps for a better level of living, and learn more about their rights.
- an opportunity for the partner organisations for a cooperation in the future
- an increase of awareness of the local people about a wider participation and initiatives.

What are the expected results?

By our experiences, of course, unfortunately not all the participants continues the way, but the big percentage getting motivated and keeping in touch with us. Some of the young participants of previous projects applied to high school and some even continued the studies in universities. We would like to reach familiar goals: motivation, involvement.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The Theatre of Oppressed will be a very new tool in that regions. Augosto Boal founded the method exactly for the reason of giving a safe platform to speaking up in the poor areas where he worked. His new techniques allowed the idea of rebellion and the impetus for change to come from within the target group.

Why is this idea important to you?

We saw how effective can be this method, during work with refugees, roma communities in poor regions. Even if we can encourage one person, it is already a huge achievement as sometimes the participants coming from very closed groups. We think it is very important to give this platform of theatre to everyone. It is also an opportunity they don't know about. It is a good start. In the cities we live our lifes, we have a lot of opportunities, more informed about the rights and practicing them. But how the people can experience it in poor regions if they even don't know about the rights and the meaning of democracy in practise.
