Idea

Idea pitch

Without infrastructure. Segregated. More than half of the population are children. But in 2020 a Safe Start Children's Home was built in the aerea, and our company The Simorág DanCircus visited it and since then decided to help. Social work is the basic need, but we can offer the next step. Without culture, without education there is hard to find your own decisions about life. We plan creative camps and combined fairytale performances for the kids in the most disadvantaged three small villages.

Where will your project idea take place?

Csenyéte, Fulókércs, Gadna. 3 Villages in Encsi district, in north Hungary

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Three small villages in Hungary. Without infrastructure. The residents are segregated roma people. Our organisation would like to reflect on the lack of motivation in these villages. To help the residents to reach something more in life than predicted. Our challenge is to give creative education as inspiration and cultural development through fairytales and creative camps for children in the most disadvantaged areas. To educate the active citizenship, particularly the children and youth. We wish to train them in decision-making as early as possible so that they can use their skills still in their childhood. We believe that the unique, creative essence of children and adolescents can best be enhanced by introducing them to culture through education. An educational process for freedom.

Who are you doing it for?

The Pro Jugendstíl Art Foundation ,which is operating the Simorag DanCircus is planning to create creative camps, with the help of actors, circus artists, drama- and circus pedagogyst. The camps are planned in the most disadvantaged roma areas of Hungary in 3 small villages. .In 2020 The Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta established a Presence Point and a Safe Start Children's Home in Csenyéte. Their social workers are the key figures, who help the cooperation with the Pro Jugendstíl Foundation. The main target group are the workers and volunteers of both foundation and the children of those villages. The primary target group are children we plan to reach exactly with our programes/approximately 150-350 kid/ 4-14 years old. The indirect target group are the parents.

How do you plan to get there?

Secret Heroes is the plan for the most disadvantaged kids in Hungary together with the main partner, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta. We plan creative camps and combined fairytale performances during the year, for the kids of 3 segregated village. We discuss and prepare the needed equipment, official certificates, obligatory health forms, organise the meals, make contracts with all responsibles.Organise and inform all partners , workesrs, volunteers. Check all the needed rules. At the beginning of the planned camps the Simorág DanCircus/dance-circus-theater company with many professional awards/ would like to perform fairytales for the children in the segregated aereas. After every performance as they are also dramapedagogyst, circuspedagogyst experts they lead interpretative dramapedagogical workshops connected to the topic of the performances. During the next days they lead creative workhsops for the kids, connecting, music, dance, circus, problem solving detective games. We use a Process-Based Evaluation. The implementation of the activities, outputs and milestones will be monitored regularly. We make sustainability and crisis plan. Results will be shared with new audiences and stakeholders.

What are the expected results?

We would like to periodically repeat the Secret Heroes creative camp and fairy tale performance for roma kids in the most segregated areas of Hungary. We expect to reach 150-350 kids per year and create a substainable method for them. The newly acquired knowledge plans to form an integral part of the children’s lives and help them utilise new methods of thinking. We expect to give a basic motivation for the kids. Supporting their talent can help them understand through art and creative education that they can have own decisions, human right can be part of their life. We expect to give them ideas about their possibilities and opportunities to dare to be Secret Heroes, who can step out of their ordered fate.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Our main goal is to teach children and youth about active citizenship through culture and creative education. To train them in decision-making with the tools of drama pedagogy, problem solving games, as early as possible so that they can use their skills still in their childhood. Explanation of our educative children theater performances and creative situation tasks can establish their understanding of-, and willingness to conform to society. Education targeting children needs to incorporate and focus on various key factors of our social life: responsibility to ourselves, caring for others and awareness of our active participation in society.

Why is this idea important to you?

Since 2010 the Simorág DanCircus performs own fairytales across the country combining theater, dance, poetry, circus. We have many professional awards as a company and personally. Honoured for cultural innovation and work against discrimination by the Cultural Ministry, and the Capital of City. Our members are both actors and acrobats, also drama teachers and circuspedagogysts. We held many children’s camps in the last 10 years also have experience in disadvantaged fields. In 2020 as a reflection to the pandemia we determined to visit the most disadvantaged areas with fairytales. The residents of these areas had never seen theater before. The little devils ask the kids for anything to fill a bag. They could only offer a blade of grass. We felt that we should continue our work there!

We had problems in reaching disadvantaged kids during the pandemia, as they do not have internet, or mobiles. They do not work on paper without teacher. We are interested about some ideas, how to reach them, how to do programs in pandemic situations.
