Idea

Idea pitch

Imagine having a home only accessible from one road and that road is not in your country, but in the neighboring one. This is only one story, however many similar stories happend after breaking of Yugoslavia, where borders were put, that did not exist before. Our idea wants to connect people, who live on border in different countries, with cultural events and to raise awareness of the problems, these people have to face, to local and central authorities.

Where will your project idea take place?

Villages on Slovenian-Croatian border (Razkrižje, Rogatec, Vinica) and Maribor, Ljubljana, Zagreb.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Before breaking of Yugoslavia there was one country, one nation and good relationship. After the breaking the border was put through many estates. That is not the only problem, many Slovenian homes have fallen under Croatian border and vice versa. There was united place once, that is now separated and people living there are facing many problems with affiliation and also infrastructure.
Although we used to be part of one country, there is a lot of hidden hatred and neglect of minorities between these nations after the disintegration. There are many people who were basically forced into other citizenship because of new border.
These are the major problems we want to solve.

Who are you doing it for?

We are doing this for people and cross-border minorities whose problems are often overlooked. They face many bureaucratic problems that arose with new border. They're also oppressed and face hatred and nacionalism.

How do you plan to get there?

1. Meetings with representatives of local communities
2. Meetings with local authorities (mayors)
3. Presentation of project at the national level
4. Interviews with locals - problems and possible solutions
5. Realization - exhibitions, round table, symposium and other events on border

What are the expected results?

We strive for removal of the physical border (fence) and want to establish trust between people. We want to eliminate nationalism and hate between the two nations, which is increasing in the last few years.
We want to give voice to minorities and bring there cultural development and not only in central and urban cities.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

We want to raise awareness and also connect people with many activities that include people on both sides of border. We believe art and culture has impact and can connect people. We want to host cultural events for locals and some other activities like hikes along the border; round-table with locals sharing their problems and solution ideas. With cultural events we want to represent culture of both nations and bring locals and local communities closer. We would also include local authorities (mayors and local community) and strive to make impact. To make their lives easier.
We also want to raise awareness in bigger city to central authorities, therefore we would host art exhibitions in three cities Maribor, Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Zagreb (Croatia).

Why is this idea important to you?

We want to make difference and make their lives easier. We want to raise awarreness about everyday problems that these minorities face. We want to bring culture and artistic happenings to the periphery and connect people with it.
