Idea

Idea pitch

Our main challenge is to decrease discrimination and violence towards trans persons through educating the general public on trans topics and experiences. We will create a platform which will include three levels: first level will be a tool for people to think about their own gender identity; second level will provide information on trans topics; final level will include tips and ideas on how the person can become active in their own community.

Where will your project idea take place?

Online and in smaller underdeveloped towns in Croatia (Osijek, Bjelovar, Karlovac, Rijeka, Pula)

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Before 2012, when Trans Aid was founded as the first and only trans specific and trans led organisation in Croatia, trans topics and experiences were invisible. Through our work we built and strengthened our community to actively raise visibility of our experiences. In last three years there is direct attack on our rights by right-wing NGOs and other actors who misinform general public about our topics in a sensationalist, discriminatory and demeaning way. There is urgent need for general public in Croatia, especially people living in smaller underdeveloped towns, to be educated on our topics by our community in an affirmative and truthful way. This will make our society more aware of the lives of the people they live with which will inspire them to include and support them.

Who are you doing it for?

Our idea will mainly affect the general public through making affirmative information on trans topics and experiences available and approachable. It will also affect trans communities across Croatia by making their local communities sensitized about trans topics and experiences.

How do you plan to get there?

The first step is to fully develop simple educational game consisting of three levels. First level will be in the form of a quiz consisting of different choice-based questions with the goal of making the player think about their own gender identity. Second level will be trivia on trans topics with a set of multiple-choice questions with the goal of the player learning about experiences outside the binary and outside sex and gender norms. Third level will be situation-based consisting of different everyday situations trans persons find themselves in. Player will be able to choose which action to take to either support the person, to join the other person(s) or to just stand by.
Next steps include developing a website for promoting the project and conducting promotional campaign.

What are the expected results?

Throughout the year we will analyse how many people played the game and what were their responses. Based on the collected data, we will act to protect the rights of our communities and address the issues in our society when needed. We will keep promoting the game and analyse the results every year in order to follow the progress of our society on being inclusive and supportive of trans persons. We are hoping that throughout the year we will see improvement through peoples’ answers on our platform and the second year of implementing the idea we believe that we’ll have even better results.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Our idea will enhance citizens’ engagement and participation through making the society more inclusive of trans persons which will lead to inclusion of trans persons into decision making processes in their local communities. It will inspire and educate the general public to defend the rights of trans persons and to support trans persons in becoming active citizens.

Why is this idea important to you?

Trans Aid advocates for self-determination and autonomy of sex and gender in our society and we work on improving the quality of life of trans persons in our society. Through our work we realized that educational activities are one of the strongest tools for achieving our mission. Our motivation comes from the need to sensitize and educate the general public whose opinion and attitude towards trans persons got more discriminatory and violent in the past three years.
