Idea pitch

Implementation of workshops informing how they can participate, which tools, how they can create and develop skills, apply talents in favor of community development.Helping young people to participate in solving problems and idealizing solutions for the development of their neighborhood, city, country is a way of raising awareness for Participation, promoting active citizenship and for Local Development. With Participation and Human Development workshops,it's intended to make them better citizens.

Where will your project idea take place?

Municipality of Sintra: municipality with a large percentage of young population.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

According to INE (National Institute of Statistics) (2013), Sintra is the second most populous municipality in Portugal and the third municipality with the highest percentage of young people: 7.6%.
Awakening community development and participation in young people from Sintra through workshops where they can learn to understand the political system, local, national and international institutions and what tools they can use to submit ideas, opinions, complaints and thus take an active role in society.
Contents such as participatory methods in civil society, in addition to associativism and volunteering, can be awakened to the consciences of our young people, making them more active as responsible and forward-looking citizens.

Who are you doing it for?

My target audience will be young people between 14 and 25 years old. This workshops would be developed in the municipality of Sintra, with the support of local associations, schools and study centers.
Workshops that make young people aware of a different perspective of what their role is, their voice before their community and how that role and voice could bring added value and development to their community, their school, their neighbors, animals , the sustainability of the planet, among many other issues that depend on social transformation.
With these examples mentioned above, not only do they become participatory citizens, but their social transformation will bring benefits to their families and community.

How do you plan to get there?

Firstly, it's important to find the places to develop the workshops, through partnerships with local entities, such as social, sports, recreational associations, public and private schools, that may be have available spaces.
Then, find the right elements for the team of trainers. The workshops are structured in six sessions with different content, which can be replicated in different places with different young people. The methodology will be participatory, that is, young people will actively participate in the development of content and have practical activities in the community. These six sessions will address topics such as “who am I and how can I be as a person, as a student, as a neighbor, as a citizen and what have I at my disposal to participate in the growth of my land".

What are the expected results?

A year from now, I will be establishing partnerships, organizing the programs, together with my partners, and I will work hard to disseminate these workshops to as many young people as I can. I will call for participation with brutal ideas that promote local and cultural development and personal and social entrepreneurship.
That will be my success: to start changing young minds, to change ways of thinking and acting. Build little by little, young participants, active citizens in the local development of their communities, taking advantage of ideas that they themselves have no idea that holds them back. It is important to understand their individual capacities for the development of the common good.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The need to “teach” young people to know how to be Citizens, and to exercise their rights and duties, it is essential creating awareness of issues that involve them. Above all, from a perspective centered on Positive and Humanistic Education, giving tools on how to participate.
A set of workshops that develop skills of human entrepreneurship, training, knowledge of how local organizations work and how to be part of them, awareness that abstention and ignorance are not the way.
The aim of these workshops is to empower young people for participation, tolerance, active citizenship, dialogue between citizens and local authorities, but mainly for Local Development.

Why is this idea important to you?

The “Oficinas do Mundo” project is being born and if we had the opportunity to implement these workshops, it would be an asset to start this team project and those other thought projects.
Working with non-formal education in young people, through participation and human entrepreneurship is my life mission. To train young people for active citizenship, for others respect, for tolerance and understanding.
