Idea

Idea pitch

We believe that a conscious, value-creating community can build the future of the region. Our goal is to create a supportive environment suitable for practical learning, where everyone can discover the challenges and opportunities of the future. We want to run a kind of creative place in Szentendre, Hungary, where we can provide the opportunity for everyone interested to evolve and discover the world.

Where will your project idea take place?

Our project has started in Szentendre, Pest county, Hungary.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The public secondary schools' makerspaces - especially at engineering and architect classes - are not well equipped in the area. Building up a Learning Adventure Hub, focusing on innovation will allow students in the region to access open source knowledge, professional tools, machinery and resources during the school year and the summer period. In collaboration with the local schools and governmental bodies ENVIENTA - Learning Adventure Hub provides wide range of programs and activities for all ages. Our cultural mission - as the whole economy went on standstill, due to the pandemic - how to restart the artistic and creative vibration of this small city, how to transform its medieval spirit to the 21st century, while the tourism remain on a very low level during the post Covid19 era.

Who are you doing it for?

Makers, children and their parents are testing new types of collaboration with schools and teachers. The proposed program facilitates intergenerational cooperation, among adults, elderly experts, makers and children. The local schools and some of the teachers expressed their interest in implementing the proposed experience based pedagogy. The established maker place could serve for few dozens of children and their teachers. Therefore we want to use the support from Civic Europe to established properly equipped local maker spaces also in partnering schools.

How do you plan to get there?

The local venue and partners of ENVIENTA in Szentendre are permanently cooperating with all local interest groups and civil society players, since last october civil society leaders were elected as major and members of local authorities, we started discussion about coordinated action. We contacted the local schools in order to involve the teachers into the summer schools we are preparing with our partners, like Kollabor. Based on this experience we intent to launch from september during the school year. Having this plans we finalized the makerspace in May, and we develop a kind of local network of small makerspaces located partly in schools and public spaces.

What are the expected results?

In a year we expect to have a broad cooperation with local schools mainly in field of STEM (a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics — in an interdisciplinary and applied approach). To achieve it we cooperate with Kollabor having extended practical experience with 27 local schools and more than 3000 kids during the semester and summer schools. The local network of makerspaces enables to experiment with initiatives similar Repair Cafes making possible to involve environmentally conscious citizens and civil society players. We launch new initiatives with the local artistic community aiming to experiment with digital equipment in artistic workshops.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

In cooperation with our association in Spain and Kollabor Natural Science Experience Center in Hungary, the network effect could take place as good practices. Establishing makerspaces are and can be typical citizen activities around the world, that facilitates knowledge / technology sharing and transfer. It is also an empowering exercise, enabling citizens to solve their local issues, problems.

Why is this idea important to you?

The aim of ENVIENTA is to facilitate peer production and enable to open source everything to empower individuals and communities. We catalyze knowledge and capacities’ sharing among civil society players and their cooperating partners among them maker spaces, fablabs, Living Labs, and other “patterns” of mass-self-organizing supported by digital tools and technologies. We aim to promote knowledge sharing and cooperation among various civil society players and partner organizations. We have established the makerspace in Szentendre as a first step to initiate and broaden cooperation with various local civil society players.
