Idea

Idea pitch

Introducing the Roma people’s past, culture, language and traditions in educational institutions. This could be advantageous for all the local students with different background. It would have a good impact on strengthening the identity of Roma students. We would also represent the Roma community through a new perspective for the non Roma students. Unfortunately, the major society has several negative and prejudicial information on the Roma which is presented by various media channels.

Where will your project idea take place?

In education institutions in smaller settlements of the Szabolcs county.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

In these regions, most Roma are living in deep poverty. Education is low, unemployment is high. We want to encourage, help these kids to break out with learning. Promote the importance of further learning, because by encouraging them we can contribute to employment and social cohesion.

Who are you doing it for?

It affects both Roma and non-Roma groups as we take the program to educational institutions. 120 School maximum 4000 children in the educational institutions.

How do you plan to get there?

contact with heads of institutions, organizations, consultation by e-mail and phone
project presentation
-lecture
-illustration
-group discussion
--questions

What are the expected results?

I think in 1 year the students’ attitudes towards Roma will change. Roma students will continue their studies, and they will remain in the education system after reaching the age of 16.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The aim of the program is to acquaint the general public with the values of Roma people. Sharing several good examples.
Active civic participation to step up the fight against exclusion and racism.

Why is this idea important to you?

It is important for me that the Roma child gets to know his/her past in the same way as the non-Roma children, because we also have our cultural traditions, we also have a writer, a poet, a doctor, a lawyer, a teacher.
The non-Roma student, though, should get a picture of this, get to know us better and decrease the prejudicial thinking.
The non-Roma student, though, should get a picture of this, get to know us better and decrease the prejudicial thinking. This will hopefully reduce exclusion in schools. I don't think we can predict what the world will be like. However, we can shape it with our actions, believing that the society can be conceived and shaped in a new way.
