With the project we will contribute to the formation of attitudes, norms and values about gender roles in society in order to eradicate stereotypes and educate children on the topics which will help them to make decisions and build a society of peace and tolerance. Target group - children from 8 up to 15 years old and children councilors. Activities: interactive exhibition at which children will be educated about children's rights, with special emphasis on gender equality.
Primorje - Gorski Kotar County, which consists of 36 units of local self – governments.
Geographic location and diverse characteristics determine the demographic structure and economic development of the county. The characteristics are based on the unequal population of the area, the intertwining of urban and rural areas, unequal conditions for the upbringing and education of children, unequal opportunities to use the services needed by children and families. A survey of children from the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County (2017) showed that 4 out of 5 surveyed students believe that the school program does not cover what they want to know about children's rights, gender equality, sexuality. Almost every other student stated that they would like to be able to be informed about these topics through extracurricular programs.
With this project intended for children aged 8-15 years, we will contribute to the development of critical thinking, understanding and systematic consideration of the complex reality that surrounds us, thinking about the future, the ability to cope with problems and responsible actions at the local and global level, human values. Children will acquire the ability to act with respect for others, the ability to participate in a democratic way in decision-making, agreement and consensus. In a globalized world, different nationalities/ethnicity to live side by side - they should therefore be taught to respect and value others. A world without distinctions would be a boring world, but, a world that limits the expression of diversity because people are either male or female is an unjust world.
Formed working group consisting of adults and children from Children's City Council of Opatija will work on collecting material for the interactive exhibition and designing the interactive exhibition which will be placed in the exhibition space in Opatija. The exhibition will be intended for children aged 8 to 15 with the aim that children visiting the exhibition with their teachers think about the issue of gender equality and stereotypes attributed to girls and boys from an early age. Visitors will come organized from primary schools of Primorje and Gorski kotar County. Exhibition will consist 15 suitcases with objects, stories and tasks about children's rights and gender equality which will be jointly designed by a mentioned working group with the expert support of the designer.
Set up an educational interactive exhibition "GIRL OR BOY-are we equal? “ The exhibition was visited by children aged 8 to 15 from the Primorje - Gorski kotar County. Through the project, we contributed to the formation of attitudes, norms and values of children about gender roles in society. We have contributed to overcoming existing obstacles in the implementation of gender mainstreaming policy, especially those of a worldview nature, we have contributed to the educational awareness of children and overcoming obstacles of a social nature. Children have increased their knowledge of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. We have contributed to the realization of the child's right and empowered children and thus contributed to achieving sustainable development.
Children participation in the life of local communities increases the awareness of citizens and the community about children's views, rights and needs, expanding the trust between children and adults , strengthens democracy and encourages the development of civil society . With the project, we included the children councilors from the Children's City Council of Opatija in the work of the working group in which children and adults equally participate in the design, implementation and realization of the project. In this way, the project makes adults aware that children are not only objects, but active participants in society , empowers children for active and responsible participation in society and public decision-making and contributes to the strengthening of inter-generational dialogue.
Our organization advocates for a better position of children in society and the protection of children's rights in accordance with the UNCRC and the promotion of the value of active children's participation at the local, national and EU levels. Gender equality as a fundamental right of all girls and boys is an integral part of the UNCRC. Education is one of the cornerstones in forming attitudes, norms and values about gender roles in society in order to successfully eradicate stereotypes about gender roles and gender equality. In addition to the family, media, culture and sports, education is a major driver of positive change towards gender equality. The creation of equal opportunities begins with upbringing and education. Gender equality is a foundation for a peaceful, prosperous world.
