Idea pitch

Sighisoara's main point of attraction is the Clock Tower, a two-plate clock, with figurines carved from linden wood, that represent the pagan gods who personified the days of the week: Diane (Monday), Mars (Tuesday), Mercury (Wednesday), Jupiter (Thursday), Venus (Friday), Saturn (Saturday)and the Sun (Sunday).By using the puppets children learn the values mentioned in The A'B'C's of HOW TO BE: acceptance, respect, giving, forgiveness, communication, gratitude, and unity like going back in time.

Where will your project idea take place?

The project will take place in Sighisoara, in the Central part of Romania, in Mures county!

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Sighisoara, like many other cities in Romania, is dealing with a degradation of family values. The family is a critical pillar of the society. If family is degrading then the society is also degrading. We’re trying to bring back those values. We noticed in our community a division between children and their parents. Children need to be teached, helped and loved. Nowadays parents tend to neglect these needs. This is where we intervene. We talk to the children. We guide them. We give them homework. In our opinion, if there was a purple heart for parenting, it would be presented to parents who spend a lot of time with their children engaging in cooperative and healthful activities like: gardening, cooking, making small household repairs, creating arts and crafts.

Who are you doing it for?

Our project is aimed at families in need of help. This includes single-parent families, divorced families, families who’ve adopted, but without excluding any other type of family. As long as a family is filled with love and support for one another, it tends to be successful and thrive. In our school, children and their parents create the family they want! Gone are the days when nuclear families (mom, dad + one or more kids) are considered the norm in Sighisoara. It's not uncommon to be raised by a single mother or be part of a mixed family. It seems more uncommon to live in a household where both parents are happily married, unfortunately, although many of those families do still exist and are also very welcomed to our school.

How do you plan to get there?

We'll develop a three-level program. Level A – At our headquarters, children and their parents can participate in workshops. Our collaborators provide us with materials and teach the children to use it.
LEVEL B- We know that basic education is done in schools. The collaboration with CJRAE institution makes it possible for 7 of our psychologists to attend some classes at the public schools. They'll go once a week to classes and try to teach children our values. At the subsequent meetings they'll discuss and analyze how well did they manage to apply the new knowledge at home.
LEVEL C- A collaboration with the City Hall where we'll be training all the employees of this institution who want to learn our way of being. They'll be able to apply the new knowledge at home, with their families

What are the expected results?

If our project will be selected, we’re hoping to use the new funds to help us grow. Ideally we’ll be able to enrol significantly more families in our program, this means we might need a bigger space and a bigger rent budget. We plan to bring more “happiness teachers” on board, so our salary costs will increase. We want to be able to acquire more teaching materials for our classes. And last but not least, to expand our horizon by adding new and exciting courses. Our end goal is a world in which the family finds its due value and importance. The more families we manage to help, the more beneficial to the community. Great family relationships will be mirrored in a better society.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

"Take care of the other, as you take care of yourself"! We consider this to be our motto. There is a moment in life when it is time to focus ourselves inward. Reinvent communication with respect. We propose a reorientation of people towards people. Everyone wants to help, everyone wants to be helped. We try to apply all these principles in the courses taught at our school. We are working on improving family relations. Family relationships are mirrored in society. We believe that by developing stronger family ties we are contributing to a better community, with more active citizens and strong democratic principles. As we understand it, active citizenship is a combination of knowledge, attitude, skills, and actions that aim to contribute to building and maintaining a democratic society.

Why is this idea important to you?

As a psychotherapist I have worked with people of all ages. I've gathered the cases of about 30 children. We work in parallel with a psychoeducational teacher on each case. In each case I've involved the parents, otherwise the cases would not improve. I wanted to help the education system not compete with it. So ... I created a school, but a soul school. A school where families can receive the right support to live in a world with peace. I've created the A'B'C's of HOW TO BE with the lesson of acceptance, the lesson of love/respect, the lesson of giving, the lesson of forgiveness, the lesson of communication, the lesson of gratitude, and the lesson of unity on earth.
The families who went through this experience had a special well-being and prosperity. Their lives have changed.
