Idea

Idea pitch

Promote coexistence and cultural diversity with the migrant population in Valencia through participatory community video processes. The objective is to establish a dialogue in the city, equipping the migrant population with tools and resources to make their narratives visible. With actions that aim to include the migrant population as active agents in the detection of initiatives, collectives and people in the neighborhoods, sharing their experiences, needs, creating networks and community.

Where will your project idea take place?

Orriols, Patraix and Jesús, neighborhoods with higher density of migrants in Valencia, Spain.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

In 2019, 118,264 asylum seekers were submitted, more than double the previous year. However, only 60,198 cases were resolved, including those accumulated from other years.Spain only offered international protection 1/20 people, well below the European average of 30%. Valencia is the third city in Spain with the largest migrant population, there is a diverse associative fabric and with a certain presence in its surroundings, however when people have been in the city for a short time, it is difficult for them to generate contacts and networks. The association "Aquarius Supervivientes" is founded by migrants rescued by the Aquarius Ship that reached the port of Valencia in June 2018. This project will help make these newly arrived people visible, to develop better in their new home.

Who are you doing it for?

The project is focused on working with the migrant population, especially those involved in the so-called “refugee crisis”. Our objective is to support them so that by their own means they are included in the associative fabric, promoting coexistence and cultural diversity in Valencia, creating and promoting their own projects, generated by and for them.

At the same time it will influence society at various levels: Firstly, the different collective fabric will be strengthened. Secondly, with the route of projections of the results, it is intended to be able to gather and involve people with different ways of thinking and see these issues (older, conservative, even racist people). Through the videos and horizontal dialogue, we’ll try to reach understanding and improve social cohesion.

How do you plan to get there?

ACTION 1. Make a diagnosis. Give tools to members of the Aquarius Survivors Association to train them as intercultural agents to map other intercultural initiatives to create a collaborative network that fosters relationships as equals.
ACTION 2. Mapping of neighborhoods in Valencia with the Aquarius Survivors Association as active agents.
ACTION 3. Participatory video methodology workshops with participants mapped into Action 2. Collective construction, focusing on the goals and themes taking into account the motivations of the participants, within the framework of democracy , coexistence, inclusion and peace.
Action 4. Projection of the videos and results in an open community presentation.
Action 5. Project evaluation and systematization.

What are the expected results?

30 PEOPLE IS EDUCATED IN PARTICIPATORY VIDEOS AND INTERCULTURAL DEVELOPMENTS.
15 NGOs and associations in Orriols, Jesus and Patraix neighborhoods, public institutions, educational and research centres and local population benefit from the project and are included in the network of collaboration.
70 people (local population) benefit from the project.
5 PARTICIPATORY VIDEOS BY MADE TO THE PROJECT. The participatory video process will empower migrants, seeing their speeches, visions and narratives included in the local media sphere, this will reach the rest of the population, sensitizing them and making them more empathetic towards these difficult realities.
5 AWARENESS ACTIVITIES IN DIFFERENT NGOs AND ASSOCIATIONS IN ORRIOLS, JESUS AND PATRAIX NEIGHBORHOODS, PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS, ETC.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Create a more inclusive city, an intercultural city. Begin a line of work that allows migrants to become empowered and carry out their own initiatives that allow them to be part of the social fabric and participation in an inclusive way, beyond assistancialist projects and basic needs that are already being developed in the territory by NGOs.
Also, with the audiovisual products resulting from the participatory video workshops, the aim is to generate local spaces where they can be presented and debated with their protagonists in different parts of the territory.
The videos, made by the participants themselves, will address issues in the framework of democracy, coexistence, inclusion and peace.
All together, we'll try to put this common interests in the local authorities agenda.

Why is this idea important to you?

-La Cosecha Producción Audiovisual has spent 5 years in Valencia promoting audiovisual as a right for all people, through participatory community video methodologies and video self-representation, we know from within, the different realities that are lived in our territory.
-Fractals has carried out social intervention projects through art in the neighborhoods of Patraix and Jesús, pioneering a methodology that combines Participatory Action Research with artistic education, in this way we conceive that art is used as a tool for educational and social transformation that intervenes in the educational process of people.
-The Aquarius Association is made up of migrant populations who work in the line of community inclusion, interculturality and the development of support networks.
