Idea

Idea pitch

The concept of the idea involves three days of conferences and dialogues with young people, having as guests public figures who are still volunteering, young people who are involved in such projects, presidents of student associations. We address all categories of young people, given that we want to do events each day based on an age category: middle school, high school, university.

Where will your project idea take place?

The project will take place in Iasi, a city located in the northeastern part of Romania.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The Romanian education system does not place much emphasis on training skills specific to active citizenship, so by promoting volunteering among pupils and students, the project could stimulate young people to become more involved in civic activities such as rural areas with disadvantaged areas, from nursing homes, animal shelters, music, film or theater festivals, children's hospitals or student associations. Once the importance of volunteering among young people has been highlighted, we can also talk about promoting participation in democratic life in Europe in terms of work, active citizenship, intercultural dialogue, social inclusion and solidarity.

Who are you doing it for?

The project is aimed at a target audience consisting of high school students and undergraduate students. Lately, more and more young people are interested in volunteering, but most of them understand the importance of civic involvement too late. In order to make them understand as early as possible the importance of involving young people in volunteering and, at the same time, to give them a motivation, through this project we aim to put them face to face with well-known personalities at national level, but who have also stood out. through volunteer activities, to provide an example to the target audience, so that the pupils and students who will participate to accumulate the necessary information or to respond to their curiosities related to this aspect.

How do you plan to get there?

We will hold three days of conferences and dialogues on volunteering, days in which we will involve young people of different age groups.
The first day will be dedicated to conferences and workshops for middle school children, the second for high school children and the last day will be dedicated to events for young people in universities. The first day will feature events such as high school volunteer conferences. Here, young people will talk to people who have set up associations and volunteer in children's hospitals, in rural areas where they can help children. They will also hold workshops to raise awareness of their involvement through volunteering, where they will do group activities, games to understand social involvement. The next day will consist of a conference given by a public figure who volunteers for children's hospitals and a workshop with a psychologist, through which young people will be trained to discuss the subject of volunteering and how they can help. Thus, everyone is skilled in a field and will be able to find a place, with the help of a psychologist, where to volunteer. The third day of events is dedicated to university students. The discussions will be supported by other students who volunteer in associations, by presidents of associations, on several fields such as: journalism, electronics, architecture, medicine, chemistry.

What are the expected results?

The main goal of this project is to attract young people to volunteer more, to get involved in the society they belong to and to work in these fields to provide the support that others need. Iasi is a city that provides many opportunities for those who want to volunteer and there is a growing need for young people involved, so we want through this project to direct them to such organizations, student leagues or high schools, to involve them in as many activities as possible. Volunteering is also a way to start working, find out what you like to do or not, that's why we want all young people involved in the project to be aware of the opportunities available to them and to do something about it.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Conferences and debates on volunteering and involvement in society will be held daily. Thus, they will learn about volunteering in nursing homes, children's hospitals, student associations, in rural areas or at events such as festivals. The debates will also involve the young participants in the event, who will be able to express their point of view, to argue it, but also to find out, from those with experience in the field of volunteering, what they can choose according to their passions or desires. In this way, they will know in which areas they can work and help, after having more discussions with people who have been involved in this field for a long time, discussions based on the experiences of volunteers from other groups.
