Idea pitch

We want to get closer to the reality of the neighborhood, taking into account the socio-economic diversity and the situations of social vulnerability that exists in the area. The focus is to foster child, youth and adult participation through our Socio-educational project for childhood development and family care, our tool to become meeting point for all the community we serve.

Where will your project idea take place?

Madrid, Spain, Chamartín district, Prosperidad neighborhood.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

We identified the need to help/support/assist children, teenagers and families residents in Prosperidad, a neighborhood located in the Chamartín district of Madrid.
Over the years, the district has progressively evolved in an irregular way, from a modest socioeconomic and educational profile (industrial and working class), towards a high-level residential development. This uneven development has led to a break in the roots of belonging to the social network and a loss of identity. Thus, the characteristics of this evolution have led to a dual character district, where a heterogeneous population emerges and results in the social exclusion of the most vulnerable groups. Prosperidad is a neighborhood with a majority of foreign population.

Who are you doing it for?

This project is aimed at all the children, adolescents, youth and families in Prosperidad neighborhood. To achieve integration from community development, we can not only act with the most vulnerable population, but with the entire population of the neighborhood, to create social awareness and an associative network.Economic and social precarity make us detect the need for this project. For the integration of these vulnerable people to be real, it is necessary to raise awareness of the existence of this reality.

How do you plan to get there?

To achieve our objectives, we plan to implement community activities:

-Preventive and educational workshops on values and healthy lifestyle: sports, sexuality, personal care, food, etc…
-Activities of citizen and political participation: we make a space to deliver people´s needs related to the neighborhood through political participation with the district.
-Community Playroom. This space is focused on childhood participation. In this space they decide and create everything related to the free-time playing, developing values like responsibility, respect, decision making, etc…
-Family psychoeducational workshops.
-Legal advice.
-Opening activities to the neighborhood.

What are the expected results?

We intend to achieve the following achievements:
-To Favor the activities that generate spaces for participation in order to promote the cohesion of local citizens.-To provide a social reference space within the local community (Prosperidad neighborhood).-To support personal and family environment and its relationship with the community, as well as the environment of the Association.-To provide alternatives to leisure time, being open to members of the community of any age.-To encourage positive synergies between citizens of the local community through inspiring, positive and cooperative activities.
-To generate an active self-managed group that promotes and carries out activities by and for the neighborhood and the people involved. In total, around 500 people.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Being immersed in a world where interculturality and globality mix together giving shape to our society and modeling our neighborhoods, the reality we perceive around us is a small-scale replica of this world of interconnections, where a multitude of life options coexist. At Jaire Association we are working to deal with all these differences since almost three decades ago, always from a respectful perspective and celebrating diversity. We start from the basis that the Association is a multi-confessional and non-partisan entity, where the freedom of each person, exercised with responsibility and respect to others, is essential. We believe in social transformation from the local level. We help to identify and act on some practices that violate Human Rights.

Why is this idea important to you?

Since 1992 we have carried out our work despite the different socio-political changes. The project has always continued with the charisma, strength, originality and joy that characterizes it, enriching itself year after year and always taking advantage of the changes as an opportunity to learn and grow. From a theoretical point of view, the need underlying this project is the progressive humanization that must take place in parallel to the civilization process. A civil society that takes into account all the people, serves to build a more democratic, advanced and fairer model of coexistence.
