Idea

Idea pitch

following Andel and La Borda models of cooperative housing (Download citation https://doi.org/10.1080/19491247.2017.1331591) we´re making a residential building, sustainable, on public land and cession of use, with 18 dwells and many common spaces, 50%social. Beeing old city center buildings old, closed and mainly of adobe and in ruins, affordable, participative and open residents communities born as civic actions, prevent ghettos and social exclusion, by being and interacting with neighbors

Where will your project idea take place?

Manresa 70 000 people, 50 km west from Barcelona, Central Catalonia, Catalonia. Spain´s north east

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

the old center city of manresa and other similar cities is full of sealed and ruined, empty adobe buildings, many without water and electricity, made two or more centuries ago. Traditional residents have moved outside the area and many newcomers, are establishing there risking become a ghetto for migrants, squatters and homelesses. We build a cooperative and communitary community centered in the people and its relations based on mutual support and cures, implicating public administrations and creating a new model of housing access, fair and an alternative to individualism and social isolation. Housing as a right and something to be used, not a property.

Who are you doing it for?

we focus our project to single persons and families from different origin, economic level and political option, who will live in community keeping private dwelling areas and sharing many common spaces, with or without social and public assistance and caring, curing and helping each other. Some of these common areas are open to neighborhood and other people civic initiatives

How do you plan to get there?

The project is already running, we are now assigning to the 10 families members which one will be their dwell, architects cooperative La Col has finished the basic project, and we plan present the executive project this summer, our social helped members will obtain Catalan Institute of Finances financement and those who can´t receive it will be supported by ethical bank Coop 57, and we are starting meetings with seven families interested in becoming La Raval residents.
Now, and if possible with your help, we plan to start a communication campaign, creating audio visual and printed information materials, searching for social support and the replication of the model via other fellow projects

What are the expected results?

We plan as results:
- to be introduced in Civic Europe projects network in search of mutual collaboration
- obtaining as many La Raval associates as we can , social endorsers and high diffusion of the project specially outside Manresa city, where La Raval civic initiative is well known.( the much the better)
- starting the replication of the project with sister initiatives at Manresa or other city with the same problem
- have well documented and analyzed all the planning (done) and construction process, allowing better project diffussion and replicability

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

active residents, solidary and cooperative, from different origins, ages and economic levels, community and communitary buildings, not owned but used during 90 years and afterwards returning to public domain allow a new and affordable housing access, with spaces open to all neighbors, ethical financement, sustainable ... helps people and strengthens people and civil iniciatives. that´s the reason we´ve choosed instead buying the land to propose the cession oif use from the municipality and when done, we won the public offer of land and start building. Ethical financing institutions ask us for the same principles that civic europe, interact with our neighbors, citizens and participation, in accordance with 2030 UN agenda and a not speculative building.

Why is this idea important to you?

I was living alone at age 63 as a newcomer in Manresa. When I heard about the cohousing la raval initiative I fell in love with the idea and the persons promoting it. Now I really believe that living in a building like the idea will allow getting old in wellness and from a certain point of view as member of a new kind of tribe.
Besides, it´s clearly a better model than the classic capitalist one of dwelling ( forgotten constitutional right) that brings wellbeing and better condition housing, offering the chance of rebuilding the city by people and not by commertial companies.
Now retired as lawyer and economist, I bring all my knowledge and time to this project and it gives me energy and motivation
