Idea pitch

We are a collective created to give voice, visibility and form to different events that are currently happening but that do not have a real impact on our daily life.
Our main objective is to make people feel these facts in their own skin, by making artistic performances where current situations are recreated.
We believe that first-person experience helps to connect with a feeling of empathy and understanding of these situations.

Where will your project idea take place?

Our objectives are Madrid and Barcelona in Spain.

But we could make the performances everywhere.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The main problem we are facing with in any Spanish territory as Barcelona, Madrid... It is that we have identified that people are often not aware of the things that happen in the world or that many times they are aware but since it does not affect themselves they do not care, and they criticize it. The lack of empathy in our society is our challenge.
We have acted on current immigration issues that are visible in Spain, but in the future we want to work with issues such as prostitution, women, paperless, etc...

Who are you doing it for?

Our main target are the "we have already heard”. People who already have an awareness of the issues but who have never really approached to know more about it.
And with katana they will feel it so close that it will incite them to action.
And consequently these people are the ones who are going to lead the most radical people the “we don’t care”, who would never come for themselves but who, due to pressure from target 1, end up coming.
And our goal is to change something in these people.

How do you plan to get there?

Our goal is to carry out 4 annual performances:
To develop them we follow a process of: research-immersion-design-viability-prototype
The first performance we have made was Katana for refugees; an artistic performance in which we represented the travel of an Oriental refugee. From the beginning (their home) to the end (Europe). The public went through each of the stages individually, and felt through the senses what refugees feel.
Now we have started the research and immersion phase for the next performance "sinpapeles". Which aims to represent how inmigrants and refugees live in our citys depending on their origins. When we would return to the normality we will continue the immersion part to start designing the performance adapting it to the space. And start thinking about next.

What are the expected results?

In a year we would have done 4 performances. Approximately 200 people would have participated in them. That would have had an impact on 400 people approx.

Above all, we want to have a media impact in the local medias.

We hope to generate an increase in awareness among citizens that is reflected in the provision of aid to NGOs that are already operating in the field.

And maybe in the future create our own network on the matter we work with.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Katana follows an action-repercussion model.

With the performances, we want to reach people who are not aware of the issues we represent and who, by feeling it in their own skin, we generate empathy in them.

From there, we want to promote the actions of citizens in helping improve these causes, providing information.

But above all we want that with katana benefits we can support people within these issues so that they can propose solutions to their own problems.

Why is this idea important to you?

My name is Emma Vernhes Cervera, future social entrepreneur of the degree of leadership, entrepreneurship and innovation in Barcelona.
Katana was born as a need when i came back from being in contact with the situation the refugees lived in in Greece.
When I returned to my house I realized that people did not care and even many people were not even aware.
I felt the need to make my city, my friends and family see and understand what was happening there, and I realized that when something does not affect you in the first person, or someone close to you, it is very difficult to empathize.
So I went crazy and created KATANA as a solution that tries to resolve the problem in the beginning.
