Idea

Idea pitch

With our project we would like to help women immigrants from Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia in their integration into the Slovenian environment. The focus of the project is on intercultural connection and getting to know each other. The project would be implemented through various workshops such as cooking workshop, where cooperation would be built through traditional dishes of different cultures.

Where will your project idea take place?

Slovenia, Carinthia region.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

In the last few years, numerous citizens of other countries have immigrated to Slovenia for economic, political and personal reasons. At first, it was mostly male population which immigrated but now women and children are joining them. Studies show that women and children are a particularly vulnerable group. They don't get sufficient assistance which leads to many practical issues. The main challenge is communicating in Slovenian language. Women stay mostly at home ( they are not employed) and only socialize with their own native speaking groups, so they don’t have the opportunity to speak Slovenian. Due to their lack of knowledge of our language, it is difficult for them to communicate in kindergartens, schools, at the doctor's and in various other public institutions.

Who are you doing it for?

For immigrant women from Albania, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia living in the Carinthia region in Slovenia. We will also indirectly include their children and the rest of the Slovenian population in the Carinthia region.

How do you plan to get there?

The immigrant women will work with professional staff employed in our organisation and if needed we will give them a choice to talk and work with independent contractors - experts in various fields relevant to our project. Our organisation's main job is to offer them support and assistance in integrating into the local society in a safe place where they can meet, socialize and share their experiences and knowledge. We are planning on organizing seminars, workshops and other useful activities.
Few examples: - Cooking workshops, - Basics of Slovene, -Presentation of their culture,-Presentation of Slovenian culture,-Creative workshops,- Job search assistance,-Creating, designing and publishing a booklet,-Physical exercise,-Child care, -Basics of computer science.

What are the expected results?

The expected results are:
- a group around 15 participants
- better integration of immigrant women into Slovenian society,
- developing a successful intercultural dialogue,
- cooperation,
- getting to know each other,
- confronting and overcoming prejudices,
- raising awareness of other cultures in our local society,
- recognizing that individual differences stem from cultural aspects,
- overcoming stereotypes.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The project will strengthen democracy and active citizenship at the local and national levels by actively involving immigrant women in the local community and teaching them about human rights, which is an integral part of a democratic society. We are aiming to reduce intolerance towards immigrants in Slovenia and more actively involve immigrant women in the community through various activities. We want to spread a very necessary knowledge, respect and connection to differences and different cultures in our environment. We see the solution to intolerance, in learning from each other, in emphasizing diversity but at the same time finding common values that connect us. To give individuals with a migrant background a space and platform for better opportunities in our society.

Why is this idea important to you?

We strive for intercultural socialization and the reduction of social exclusion. We also want the participants of Slovenian nationality to get to know different cultures and develop tolerance towards other nationalities. With the workshops we try to present to the locals different cultures of nations, what are their customs, cuisine in order not to cultivate intolerance and hostility, but to realize that diversity can be an added value.
