The joys and responsibilities of parenthood are not shared equally in our society. Within this project we aim to target and put in focus need of shared parenting and caregiving among millenials and beyond. Target group are parents and all those whishing to become parents one day. Main activities of the project are: lectures, manual production and dissemination and short video production.
The project will take place in Istra, Primorje and Gorski Kotar region but also in other Cro regions
Equal parenting is a topic that must be discussed both in urban and suburban areas. In Croatia this topic is still rather new and it is well known that the father’s primary role is considered to be that of the bread winner and mother is the one that has to be at home with the child. These attitudes have some serious repercussions as women tend to postpone decisions to give a birth to a child at later stages of their life or it makes it much harder for women to maintain a career after childbirth. This topic is more than a generation deep, and it is going to take many seasons of parents and projects to change the culture and with this project we want to give our contribution in increasing engagement of both parents in the childrens growing.
With our project we want to focus on young individuals, future or current parents and try to implement the need of shared parenting and caregiving among them.
Statistics show that the number of parents that look for help from our partner association come from urban areas, but parents from suburbs such as i.e. Gorski Kotar have grater problems due to the environment and the perception of raising a child in that area. Living in smaller communities topics such as shared parenting are perceived as unpopular and people are much more traditional (mother-father roles). With various lectures, short videos and workshops dedicated to our target group we want to help them juggle the competing demands of the parenting and raise awareness about shared parenting and its benefits.
Together with our partner organisation, we plan to make exact action plan of all activities: lectures: dates and lecturers, manual: experts and topics and scenario for video. We plan to promote project topic widely together with our local Rotary branches (each city has branch responsible for the region) to make wider and long term impact.Via lectures we will tackle shared parenting topics, its benefits, myths, pro and contra, ways to get there etc.All lectures will be done by experienced lectures recommended by our partner organisation. In manual we will promote idea, present shared parenting concept, give info on relevant researchs and useful tools and tips.Video is aimed at children to realise importance of shared parenting. Lectures and manual are aimed at parents, and video at children.
We want to shake up deep-rooted ideas in smaller rural communities. We hope to encourage future and present parents to think and redefine parents’ roles in raising a child. For us, the success of the project would be the very fact that we encourage people to exchange opinions and think critically about the problem addressed. We want to achieve even a small shift in people's minds, which would be a big step in the global effort to equally involve both parents in the parenting process.
Main tangible results of our project are:
• Set of lectures undertaken by experts in field
• Manual on shared parenting topic
• Video
• Number of media appearances
By implementing project, we will contribute raising awareness about shared parenting, increase understanding of needs and ways to do it and ensuring balanced connection among community members. Our project will lead to understanding what shared parenting is setting clear picture about its benefits. In this way it will lead to smother transition and agreement on child custody in case of divorce. On the long-term basis, it will lead to equal parent participation in child’s growth and life. By doing this we ensure inclusive childhood.
Lectures, manual and video will tackle topic and encourage dialogue. By implementing this project, local communities will get motivated for a) topic and b) civic engagement.
Demographic trends in the Western world have long been markedly negative. The name Europe as an "old continent" takes on a completely different meaning in this context. In this sense, we have decided to contribute to solving this problem in this way. We are a group of young people who are or will soon become parents themselves. We ourselves become aware of the pressures of the environment to which young fathers are exposed when and if they express a desire to stay home with the child. This prompted us to think and act in the direction of changing socially rooted prejudices. On the other hand, we live in ages when divorce unfortunately is not rare thing. In this situations, shared parenting is the most important for healthy and inclusive child growth.
