OdV Ponteppì is an Voluntary Association born in 2013, an incubator for the activation and partecipation of the youth, workinkg in Laurentino 38 (Rome, Italy)

Idea

Idea pitch

Encouraging the growth of the youth and the community taking part in the project through a cooperative learning style, boosting knowledge on rights availability and educational
opportunities to increase the wellness of the community and to give back a positive identity to a deserted territory at the edges of Rome’s outskirts. Asset, tools, investment, activation, positive relations, love for our cultural and social context, in order to grow up… all of us, together.

Where will your project idea take place?

Laurentino38 belongs to the outskirts in Rome (Italy) with a significant social isolation

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

we mean to intervene in this highly populated neighbourhood but forsaken, where the connections and the lack of services, cultural proposals and gathering places are absent, and characterized by:
-a high drop-out rate
-a high rate of petty crimes and juvenile delinquency
-an extremely law literacy rate
-a high rate of migrant family units, mainly from Arab origins, struggling to fit in due to cultural and linguistic difficulties and differences
-a high rate of socio-economic poverty and housing occupancy.
How to do that? Through a structured action able to combine the access to rights and their protection, educational opportunities, concrete comparison and a real involvement of the youth, tearing down linguistic and cultural barriers to make a Community, together

Who are you doing it for?

These are the different target groups of our Community, who are going to benefit from our project:
1) the fragile, isolated and needy elderlies who require concrete help with small house fixes (carpentry, plumbing, etc)
2) the underprivileged youth, drop-outs, kids at risk of marginalization and peer deviance
3) migrant families who experience a daily distress in terms of inclusion and access to any kind of right, from the aids provided by the governance to the communication with the educational institutions regarding their children’s studies
Thanks to the network built on the territory, on which we have been present and operative for fourteen years, we have the means and opportunity to reach (mainly through word of mouth) a high number of recipients belonging to these target groups

How do you plan to get there?

We planned the implementation of three different services addressed to the community (especially to the weakest categories), 1) free help desk for legal assistance, 2) a cultural-linguistic mediation service, 3) an emergency service for small house fixes (carpentry, plumbing, systems) to train the underprivileged kids of the community between the ages of 16 and 21. Each trainee will receive 500 EUR (bonus).
Step: assessment, counselling, orientation 2) launch of the above-listed services through the empowerment of the trained youth. Method: cooperative learning, with professional tutors, in order to build interdependent relations among the elements as to reach the common goals.

What are the expected results?

The implementation of combined training interventions and welfare community is aimed at providing the proper tools to facilitate the integration into civic life and the world of work through the acquisition of skills and competencies. That by also creating real opportunities of integration and socialization, encouraging their key role in regards of the community.
The community needs to be able to count on the possibility of acquiring a real capital, which has to be social (reliable networks), instrumental and of available resources (services and professionals capable of receiving and handling needs), and socio-cultural (fundamentals of collective identity building, through activation, personal and professional growth, the youth know-how)

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The whole process is going to be characterized by an educational and training path, focused on active citizenship. Rights education and protection are going to be two of the project key points aimed at strengthening the democratic process, the idea of active citizenship and the importance of comparison and democratic debate.
Learning to take care of our own community through participation means learning how to be an active citizen. To this end, we will provide the kids who are going to take part in the educational activities on mediation and law and the practical workshops, with:
-creative legality workshops
-gathering activities aimed at developing a sense of belonging and at enhancing minorities
-a 4-days camp as the project’s closure, to share results and set new goals

Why is this idea important to you?

Free access to the law complies with the principle of substantive equality, which is the foundation of every democracy. The main goal of our Association is to fight cultural poverty and all forms of social exclusion through the voluntary contribution of citizens who decided to make their passion and their competencies available to the community. Encouraging inclusive and democratic relational models, protecting fragile individuals, enhancing minorities, being active citizens. Creating and strengthening a sense of community and civic belonging among the new generations. Those are the key values of our doing. We hear the neighbourhood need to play a leading role again, to get back its gathering areas, to have access to legal protection tools, to increase learning and networking opportunities
