Idea pitch

We are convinced that education is the engine for people to develop, and thus feel as useful members within society, regardless of their social situation, origin, or ethnicity. It is an exercise of empowerment and inclusion, which fights against social labels and prejudices. With the activities, we want adolescents to be living and active members of their community, and thus, exercise their rights as citizens in a full and democratic way.

Where will your project idea take place?

Fraternidad Neighbourghood (FN), Puertollano. Rural town in the centre of Spain.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The FN has special risk and social exclusion, where families of different origins and ethnicities coexist (gypsies, Latins, Eastern Europe and Morocco). Local families have limited economic resources or are in a situation of poverty. It is a stigmatized and low-income place. This situation hinders access to education and social participation, which means that these young people cannot access a normalized life and are at risk of social exclusion. With this Project we want to provide opportunities to the youth population through non-formal education, and in this way, make visible their potential and everything they can contribute to their community. We know that when young young people feel they have value, they can make the situation change and thus create a different future space for all.

Who are you doing it for?

We will work mainly with youngsters between 12&18 y.o. from FN (150 adolescents aprox.), which has special difficulties of inclusion in the community, in addition, of abandonment of the educational system and school failure, but through the involvement of other social agents, the project is expected to have an impact on the population of a wide part of the neighborhood, approximately 800 people, since the activities to be carried out will favor empowerment of spaces, for the use of the entire community. The essential involvement of their families will be sought in the different activities proposed, together with the involvement of the different associations from the neighborhood. The intercultural character of the population must be highlighted.

How do you plan to get there?

The key to work with the youth population of the neighborhood is to do it within their own context, therefore, Street Education will be used to reach them. This means that the educational team, previously, will carry out work in the parks and squares of the neighborhood. Next, activities will be carried out simultaneously in the Youth Center and in the street. Inside the center the educational sessions will be held and outside the different initiatives created by the young people themselves will be launched. The activities will be launched with the Neighborhood Associations and in collaboration with the social agents. Specifically, the following actions will be carried out:
- Painting and rehabilitation of the park of the little "pocitas". Thematic in favor of tolerance and against inequality.
- Painting of the banks of the neighborhood with the theme against gender violence.
- Creation of an intercultural space. Significant sample, during all weekends of the cultural potentials, through concerts, intercultural cooking courses, activities of coexistence between families, ect.
All these activities will be promoted by the young people, at the same time, who will have an essential role in their organization and dissemination, to get the involvement of the neighborhood population.

What are the expected results?

The main goal is to ensure the youth population inclusion in their local community and is an example of social responsibility and participation. Youth will be more aware of the social problems that surround them and will generate answers and solutions. Success lies in them being able to overcome the daily difficulties they encounter in their lives. We will also ensure their motivation and their community takes them into account for decisions affecting the society. We will consider that this population will be empowered when their functions as 1more agent within its community &their voices are taken into account in the changes needed for its community to progress and get out of the loops of social exclusion in which is. young people will learn to defend their interests in an active way.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

From this project, the creation of associative fabric will be promoted, through which the actions will go from being specific events to being sustained over time. Through youth associations, adolescents will be able to continue energizing the cultural space, so that the activities have continuity, and it becomes a space for meeting and democratic exercise. As an association, young people will be able to participate in the different institutions, as a representative agent of their population. For this, young people will be trained in the different necessary skills to exercise their rights and be able to be active participants within their city.

Why is this idea important to you?

EMPU-G is a stable project with great recognition at provincial level, which has been struggling to improve the lives of people with fewer opportunities since 2013. This experience supports us to face a new challenge, such as working in a suburb like this one. What differentiates our entity and its professionals is our work philosophy. At Pokhara, we understand that everyone, regardless of their personal or social situation, has the right to live fully and to have the same opportunities than the rest. We understand that it is a matter of social justice the fact of promoting actions that lead people to fight for their dreams. More than 2000 youngsters have already changed their lives thanks to EMPU-G and we want the ones from this suburb to be able to do it as well.
