Idea pitch

We are planning to work on a suburb in the city of Milan through an intervention of social and community theatre with children and adults citizens all together to raise questions about democracy. Building up together a theatre show that brings to the stage the democratic principals on which Italy an European Countries are based.
The positive impact on the territory is to help future voters to become more aware and open to the diversity, stimulating a sense of belonging and reciprocal solidarity

Where will your project idea take place?

Italy, Milano, suburbs of: Baggio, Quinto Romano, Figino, Quarto Cagnino, Selinunte

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

The project wants to mature in the participants a sense of belonging and re-appropriation of democratic values through the practice of community and social theater.
Also, it intends to involve and educate the new generations as active participants.
A theatrical performance that not only tells, but puts in the hands of young people the pencil and the electoral card on which to leave their mark to experience live "the pleasure"
of participating in the cultural, political and decision-making life of their community.
Young people will collaborate with people from older generation to learn from their experiences and share different intergenerational prospectives.

Who are you doing it for?

The key target of our project will be made of a group of about 30 adults and elderly (between 60 to 95 years) through our social and community theatre laboratory, who will work with some classrooms from a neighborhood school - about 150 students from 7 to 17 years old.

How do you plan to get there?

The labs meeting will happen twice a week for 6 months, during these labs we work with theatrical improvisation and theatrical games to come out with ideas
of how to represent and how to explain the mains principals of democracy and to bring out their own personal relationship with the actions on which these principals are based. As like:
- the electoral campaign
- voting and its procedures
- the counting of elections
- those elected in the parliament
- the formation of a government team

An intergenerational meeting that allows both the elderly and the young to dialogue and listen to each other to build together the future of their territory, Italy and Europe.

After the various workshop, theatrical shows will take places for all citizen and public institutions.
Some theatrical reruns will be performed and at the end of each show the audience can intervene and give his opinion on social issues, or leave an idea in a box, placed at the entrance. All the ideas collected will then be presented to the public administration.

What are the expected results?

Results we expected are:
- Dialogue between different generations, in order to share visions of the future
- Exchange of competences, experiences and ideas;
- Civic, political and social participations from young people;
- Increase of awareness about civic, democratic European values;
- Community participation and cohesion;
- Cultural and social connection thanks to theatre practice

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Our idea strengthen active citizenship using the imagination, creative talent and inventiveness of each participant to find a future vision of our democracy.
Theatre is also a very useful tool for learning and connecting new ideas, because “the creation of something new doesn’t have to be through the intellect, but with the play instinct that is driven by inner impulses and by the community itself”.
In fact, the meeting between different generations brings new thoughts, stimulates different
ideas, as the human nature needs social life to rethink and recreate new actions.
This action allows individuals, groups and the community to access and explore their individual or collective power.

Why is this idea important to you?

Our project is very feasible, because our association has been active for more than 15 years in Milan, working on suburbs territory with social theatre practice.
This has allowed us to build over the years a network of public and private organizations: institutional bodies, local associations, commercial activities, informal groups, press and social channels with which our organization has established active and profitable relationships. A network also made up of citizens and professionals who actively collaborate in the city of Milan to contribute to social mobilization.
