Idea

Idea pitch

Water sources are highly impacted by intensive agriculture, mass tourism and climate change, constraining opportunities for youth to envision a future in the territory. We aim to activate intergenerational dialogue between youth, civil society actors and decision makers around regenerative solutions for the future of the bioregion through a collaborative design process that strengthens long lasting community engagement, active involvement at the local level and sense of belonging to the territory

Where will your project idea take place?

Southwest Algarve, Portugal

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Growing dependence on mass tourism leading to seasonal unemployment and lack of opportunities for younger generations to stay and get involved locally.Growth of intensive agriculture and climate change impacts leading to water scarcity, pollution and drought. Most young citizens are not aware of water issues and are not involved in creating regenerative solutions and opportunities for their future. There's no participation in public debates and decisions.Tourism facilities have no accountability for their damage on aquifers which communities depend on to survive. There is willingness and policies from governmental structures to engage young people, yet most tools are out-dated and still coming from an old paradigm that creates no engagement or social innovation.

Who are you doing it for?

Our target groups are young people whose future depends on today's decisions. Our youth groups differ from each other;some are engaged in food production and community resilience but very isolated in private contexts away from public structures, others are trained and involved in social regeneration but cannot reach widely for lack of resources and tools, others are willing to be socially active but have no tools, infrastructure, support or capacity to have an impact.Decision makers are not listening or supporting any of them effectively. At the same time we intend to organize with community catalysts already in the field to act as bridges and connect the existing gap in order to facilitate a regenerative approaches and dialogue with the most active citizens to inform decision-makers

How do you plan to get there?

1.Invite, gather and present project to all partners and target groups
2.Selection process using Sociocracy3.0 for representatives of each partner to take part of capacity building and collaborative design processes with our Community Catalysts for Regenerative Development Toolkit (www.catalysts.community)
3.Capacity building training on CCRDToolkit
4.Collaborative design process with CCRDToolkit and Sociocracy3.0 patterns for facilitation
5.Implement Regenerative Livelihood Strategies that emerge from the design process
6.Harvest next steps for a new iteration of design process and select funding strategies for long term impact, involving tourism entrepreneurs

What are the expected results?

Young people, community catalysts, decision makers and tourism entrepreneurs from the bioregion will be involved in equivalent discussions around current local challenges such as water use, regenerative use of soils and climate change and will be involved in co-creating actions that benefit the future of community and planet, towards an inovative paradigm of community development
Different people who already act individually will be more involved with each other and together will work towards stimulating regenerative community development through water regeneration strategies
Community actors will promote and work towards a vision beyond tourism, in order to overcome seasonality, through new activities that can boost the local economy and local regenerative development.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Community members from different groups and ages will be involved in co-creating relevant strategies with equivalence and transparency with decision makers to inform public policies on water issues and reach SDG targets;using processes that build ownership of the future, sense of belonging for the territory and empowerment for taking action towards water regeneration,a crucial topic for the future of the bioregion;CCRDToolkit and Sociocracy3.0 trainings are tools based on cooperation, equivalent decision making accountablity, deconstruction of systemic issues of power, privilege, antropocentrism and illusion of unlimited economic growth, building capacity for strong and long lasting collaborations;sharing information and stimulating active citizenship by offering practical tools to do so.

Why is this idea important to you?

Our team is made of local community catalysts and non-profits involved in the transition movement who decided to come back, work or stay in the territory and participate in eco-social regeneration, all are involved and already contributing to the future of water for coming generations, protecting ecological landscapes, reclaiming local infrastructures and decision making roles, engaging in regenerative local initiatives; There's a deep sense of belonging, commitment and willingness to act on eco social regeneration and we will do anything we can to support this transition locally and strengthen community resilience. This is a way to support a field work that is happening and need to scale up for bigger impact and real change,
