Idea

Idea pitch

CIVIC SPACES FOR SPORT aims at offering to citizens in the city of Latina a vehicle of inclusion through sport as vector for integration and socialization. A web platform (website and application) will offer the occasion to create a community to share sport information, personal training session, but most of all the possibility to share information and media about the city. Through the platform, at the members will be given advice of meeting events.

Where will your project idea take place?

Latina, Lazio, center of Italy

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Latina has seen in the last decades the immigration of Polish, Albanian, Romanian, Indian, East European and African. The city itself was founded in 1930's by people from several regions of north Italy. Currently foreign citizens resident in Lazio amount to 683.409; of these 8% is concentrated in Latina. Nowadays, citizenship in Latina presents integration issues as well as obstacles to the exercise of civil and social rights by immigrant citizens. There is a clear need to enhance the participation and promotion of the culture of duties and responsibilities, as well as rights, among indigenous and foreign residents.

Who are you doing it for?

Running is becoming one of the most popular sport for amateurs, it can be practiced everywhere because it needs no expensive equipment. Nevertheless, this sport has always been considered as an individual sport but it can be used as a vector for integration and socialization. Athletics has always been a sport free from ideology therefore, it seems to be the best sport to overcome social barriers and prevent political exacerbation, racism. The project wants to promote sport and the same time inclusion between Italian and foreign people, that are not integrated in a common civic space. They will be reached with the help of a civic and social organization that will spread this opportunity to create an international local community.

How do you plan to get there?

CIVIC SPACES FOR SPORT provide for several steps to create an inclusive community: the creation of a geo-referenced web platform created by MetriUp, the dissemination of the project through meetings organized by CSV Lazio and local civic administration, an opening sport event, sharing of local information on the platform through UStep, meetings organized with the local administration to inform about possible urban transformation to welcome sport, organization of 4 sport and social meeting dedicated to the community, virtual sport events.

What are the expected results?

The local citizens have the possibility to practice individual and free sport since the city is near the sea and have several municipal parks. There are several sport events organized in the year but there aren’t ‘til now projects that aim at the specific inclusion of foreign people. The project will be the occasion to involve all the citizens in different common aims: the practice of sport, the creation of a community without differences, common opportunities.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The project aims to create both virtual and real civic spaces, both virtual and real communities. The creation of virtual communities on the platform allows to start a fully inclusive civic space that is then transformed into social contacts through sporting and social events in the territory. FIDAL intends to reach the project objectives by sport, since it contains itself principles of sharing and participation. CIVIC SPACES FOR SPORT will also be a driving force for the promotion of an urban transformation to accommodate sports development in the city, to offer to all its citizens.

Why is this idea important to you?

CIVIC SPACES FOR SPORT project's methodology is based on making people feel part of a community by comparing their physical performance and social information. As a result of being part of a community formed by people coming from every social background, involved users could develop new interests, discover new passions and target new objectives. Moreover, being part of a community under the umbrella of a sport activity means tearing down social barriers, the real cause of radicalization.
