Idea pitch

Today world has welcomed the sharing economy where shared workspaces have become widely popular and the alternative to traditional office space. Women, as we all know, have been victims of gender bias and stereotypes for so long. The past few years are notable for the improvements established for women to gain far-ranging legal rights and girls to achieve increased educational attainment. To this end, we aspire to provide working women to fulfil and enjoy their roles as professionals and mothers

Where will your project idea take place?

Heraklion, Crete, Greece

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

For the past decade or so, Greece has been tormented by a severe financial crisis with the recent coronavirus pandemic adding to that immensely. Victims of this escalated situation are women of all ages that have faced so far increasing unemployment, exclusion, financial problems, domestic abuse, gender bias and so on.
Our project aims to tackle this through the creation of a commonly shared working space for women, where they will obtain and share support and encouragement in order to thrive professionally, attain further training in soft skills and be offered the much needed, childcare service.

Who are you doing it for?

Through our project, “Working MoM Hub'', we aim to reach women and young girls of ages ranging from 17 and up, who aspire to become professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, freelancers or whatever they choose, by obtaining more skills, or they are already on their way, or simply wish to take further steps in their careers and by doing so they do not miss out or compromise their other societal roles as wifes, mothers, and active citizens.

How do you plan to get there?

The first women-and-families-focused co-working space and learning hub with
 on-site childcare in Greece.
Through the Working MoM Hub we want to create a hub for women to work efficiently, develop professionally, start or grow their businesses, gain new skills and get empowered through a strong community of peers to achieve gender equality at the workplace -and beyond. A space where mothers can make all of this happen too, whilst their children engage in creative play and activities at an arm’s length.

We believe in the power of women to grow and shape the future of work for all of us, when given access to the necessary support, tools and network. We ‘ve got the support, the tools and the network. Now it is time to create a space that will maximise both: the first business, empowerment & community space for women and families in Greece.

What are the expected results?

We are confident that by the end of the project phase more and more young moms will have gained the opportunity to work under proper conditions and be with their babies in the same place. More possibilities and opportunities will have arised for them to find a secure permanent employment. There will be more effective communication established between social services, service users, the local community and the local government. More people, due to the domino effect women create in their environments, will be involved in the conversation of improving the local community. Finally, we expect to have created the sustainability of a cultural and community hub producing various, interesting programs, where different social groups can exchange ideas, learn and actively spend their free time.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

Social and economic policymaking is often appointed to experts, with little attention paid to the voices and needs of communities, especially those of young people, resulting in a mismatch between what experts claim people need versus what communities actually need. Through our project, we believe that we can help, inspire and accommodate working mothers, by providing them with the means and the appropriate space to employ the best working conditions, and in doing so they will be empowered and facilitated to acquire a strong voice to use in their political and social engagement.

Why is this idea important to you?

Our project team’s leadership consists of two women descending from and residing in the region, both excelling in the educational and entrepreneurial sectors, that can serve as role models for all women and girls. Their persistence, hard work, in-depth knowledge of the problem’s parameters and commitment have enabled them to create synergies and a supportive network of other national and local organisations, dedicated to advancing economic empowerment for women and girls, reflecting the mission and presenting utmost credibility in the gender equity national and international space.
