Idea pitch

The participants, a mixed ensembe with civilians, artists and newcomers will participate in series of promenades in order to create a "new" presence of a local community. We aim to create paths from the past to the presence, to explore various systems of "governments" and civilian ethics in the Island of Corfu, the most 'west european' city in Greece. Corfu, part of Venisian occupation and English territory till 1864,has an old city full of layers of different identities.

Where will your project idea take place?

Corfu Island, North West Greece (borders with Italy and Albania)

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Corfu, while it is an island in the northwestern tip of Greece, on the Adriatic, between Italy and Albania, it never recognized the Ottoman occupation like the rest of Greece.Instead, experienced successive 'protections' , by many different conquerors. This, in addition to a very beautiful old town, also gave a special artistic identity. But the freedom of multiculturalism combined with the isolation and meaning of the island 'border',the continuous arrival of refugees, yet from the First World War (Serbs, Italians,Greeks), economic migrants from Albania,at the same time as the unbridled tourist development, th gave her a special identity. without knowing the recent refugee flows, he has other challenges to solve, having 5 psychiatric hospitals and a high security prison in the urban fabric.

Who are you doing it for?

With this performance we aim to create awareness and find an emotional and potical path to discuss about multicultural and European identity as part of our everyday life.
Τhat includes people that work in in social service (psychiatric stores, prisons, institutions with people with special needs), roma people, can follow memory of the city of Corfu in the past, the way people were, the reason they disappear, the way that war or losing a country effected the way of the city architecture, the name of the streets, the small stories of squares and alleys. We will remember stories of our grandparents about the meaning of things ,we will search archives of the evidence of the authorities decisions for the people and the land.

How do you plan to get there?

3 Workshops during summer
performing the archives and collect stories and oral tradition from the city.
4 groups will work with different dramaturgs to built thwe possible itineraries.
Activities that embrace students and volunteers, will emerge till September
Meetings with the students of Universities and their contribution in the project

What are the expected results?

We hope to leave our mark on the city, with small insignia, but what we definitely want is to change the way we move and exist within the urban fabric.
Future meetings as well as exchanges of material that will arise, can help more and more citizens participate and be established as a creative walk in the city, which will reconcile us with the past, but also with today's complex daily life.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The everyday modern city, trying to grow between a city living monument, which is colonized of millions of visitors each year, and living almost exclusively on tourism, has the unique opportunity due to the latest pandemic, to reconcile with its present, to discover the past, and to chart new paths. Workshops, walks, research on streets and buildings, archives, the routes that everyone makes in the city every day, adoption of institutions, and exploration of primitive elements of democracy in everyday life, is the goal of the events.
The aim is to re-create a map of an unknown city, so familiar, however, and strengthen the concept of citizen through knowledge of history. City will become a book for the civilians- a living monument, a monument of active democracy.

Why is this idea important to you?

Τhe moment the personal experience becomes collective is the basis of Democracy. The more personal stories come to light, the more they need to integrate and converse with the environment and living history. The theater must find new paths and the public space must be rediscovered, claiming the basis of democracy, that cannot be other than the physical presence.
