Idea pitch

We all know lonely heroes around us. People who has the passion, the mission, but not enough power. Our project idea helps these Young people to be able to make their "community dreams" come true. We believe that community groups can't live long without good organizers or leaders. But what is a good one look like? Able to: agitate, motivate, involve, communicate, cooperate and of course learn. And how they learn? By doing.

Where will your project idea take place?

North-Plain Region- Hungary- 3 counties: Hajdú-Bihar, Szabolcs-Szatmár- Bereg, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

In the involved region there is a dependant active citizenship and participation. Since Szabolcs-Szatmár has for example a lot of underpriviliged parts or Hajdú-Bihar is one of the strongest part in Hungary vote for the Fidesz, we should check the relations between the people and the political power closer. Public work, manipulated granting Systems, unseen burocracy, etc. We experienced in the last 10 years the lack of cooperation not just among people, but also organizations. There are no renewals in the civic, institutional or governmental systems, just deeply entrenched structures. The social relations deteriorate year by year, the people are desintergrated and isolated from each other.

Who are you doing it for?

Our plan is to find 10 potential young leaders/organizers in the region, and armor them to be able to activate others. We are not looking for professionals, nor people who are already working in the field. We are looking for those, whose motivation for social change can be seen, they are usually participate in and initiate actions, they have a good sense of dealing with people. The main aim is to involve young people between 18-30. We believe that young people can unbuild the old, antidemocratic structures and rebuild the new community based operations in many proccesses.

How do you plan to get there?

1.Before the project start we are planning to talk with at least 10 people (experienced leaders/educators from the region), who can offer potential leaders to our program.
2.After the program starts the members of the committee make interviews with at least 30 potential young leaders.
3. Community meeting with the potential leaders.
4. Training for them about community work.
5. The leaders start to work in the field.
6. We are mentoring them and organize a workshop every month. The workshops will be always held in a different space, related to the leaders fieldwork. Therefore the workshops are study visits too.Making 7 small videos as online community work courses about a topic, that can be useful for other community workers
7.Big celebration in the end: silent auction, lectures, etc.

What are the expected results?

10 new, active and progressive groups will be established in the region by local leaders, who will also have a network with each other. It will develop not just the local participation, but also decrease the isolation locally. Moreover on the regional level it will also help the communities to cooperate with each other, and build together a stronger, renewed civic society, that hopefully will force the oldies to be more community based and democratic.
The video will have an effect on professional level, because it can spread as a tutorial for other potential leaders in the country who are already opened for community work.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

We are looking for active citizens and train them to be able to agitate and motivate other people to take actions along their problems, issues and interests. The main idea is to develop leaders to be able to initiate and maintain a group that can strengthen the social inclusion and help people to think together. Our idea based on the snowball effect, that directly reach 10 people, but indirectly at least 100, who will be able to act along their problems and respond to their community challenges not just locally, but on the regional level as well. Moreover, thanks to the training and workshops the first 10 people can build relationship between each other as well.

Why is this idea important to you?

The Alternative Communities Assocation (AKE) grant about 50-60 NGOs every year. Most of the projects we are supporting are not tackling local issues or problems (no road, no waste removal, discrimination, no community space, segregation, etc.), just giving answers for general problems, like lack of cultural events, no programs for elder people, lack of skills, etc. We feel when we read these projects, that the real fieldwork, need assesment and personal contacts are missing from them, and what's more, the method of how to do that too. Our project focus on the youth, and we know that they Will be able to change this process and rebuild the civic Society. Our loneliness as a grass root organization in the region need to be solved too and this project make other fortresses.
