Idea pitch

Multimedia campaigns for activists, initiatives and movements for raising awareness about most urgent social problems, strengthening and connecting civic organizations, while building national awareness on how people´s problems trickle down from the social, economical and political. By destigmatizing them, this will mobilize local communities on the national level, in a way in which the knowledge and social action circles.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

International media and Amnesty International are reporting Slovenia is one of the countries where human rights erradicated in 2020 the most. In the last year the Government who took over, cut the money flow from Slovenian Press Agency, destabilized media and cultural sector, as well weakened civic organizations´ roles and their inclusion in the process of decision making or changing the laws.

Who are you doing it for?

For all the people living in Slovenia in all the regions, cities and villages, of all generations. For all organizations, initiatives, volunteers, activists working tirelessly in the recent years and in the recent year to protect those human rights, being attacked. They are drained  and burnt out, so this project supports and connects their work in a time where their role in society is being subjogated. For people being on the line between staying individual or contributing something for the collective, getting empowered by understanding the situation.

How do you plan to get there?

Our idea is to create multimedia awareness rising campaigns on 6 topics: 1. Poverty and inequality in Slovenia, homelessness and national housing crises, 2.. The rising violenece in our homes, 3. National mental health crises, 4.. National environmental crises, 5.. Work exploitation and erosion of working rights 6. Inequality on the basis of where you are coming from and the rise of hate speech.
For 1 year two people from our organization with journalist, documentary  film production and graphic design background, would work part time daily on the pre-production, production and post-production of professional multimedia videos (all the formats together  bring 54 videos).For each topic we would devote 2 months of our knowledge, skills and platforms, connecting with at least 4 non-governmental organizations/initiatives that are researching, educating, pressuring the political and organizing social actions. Putting the knowledge of all together, we would create a short documentary film for each topic and collectively screen it at the end of 2 months. In between those 2 months, we would additionaly create 4 infographics and 4 shorter videos (3-5 minutes long), from week to week building the basic knowledge on the social problem. All in all, the project would connect  at least 25 organizations who would get professional video content for social media campaigning on the weekly basis

What are the expected results?

- Bigger socio-economic and political literacy of general population in Slovenia- bigger visibility of marginalized and unheard voices
- as a cosequence to that, bigger active citizenship and social action in the local and community level
- strenghtening the promotion, visibility, research and work of organizations of Slovenian civic society that are covering and fighting the cruical battles for human rights in the country, on national and local levels
- strenghtening the network, collaboration and existence of those organizations with a concrete content on a national level
- exchange of knowledge, skills and ideas
- encouragement of information about the most relevant social problems in the country, circulating, especially during and after the time of global health crises

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The way the project is build, it would empower civic society with political understanding of our most urgent social problems on the national level, which would encourage them to participate more in civic initiatives on the community level, as well in shaping the atmosphere and ideas for social changes on the national and regional level. We believe people would participate more, either as volunteers or activists if the interconnected causes and consequences of their problems would be destigmatized by explaining them how they trickle down from the social, economical and political. Those problems, getting explained by initiatives and organizations of civic society already achieving social action and changes, will motivate them where to start and where to go.

Why is this idea important to you?

We are activists, artists and educators, using Theater and Pedagogy of the Oppressed methods and others for spreading knowledge about global and local inequalities, existing and rising out of political, economic and social power structures. We believe empowerment of  every community and social change starts with awareness while human connection and community building. For over 10 years the members of our organization, from all areas and focused on existing social problems, are looking for the tools and tehniques to spread it. Workshops, work in schools, theater, street performances and interventions, festivals, conferences, international collaborations.
