Idea

Idea pitch

Multidisciplinary workshops for local NGOs in Bulgarian towns and villages working with youth, minorities and people in rural areas. Together we discuss local challenges with NGOs, their target audiences, volunteers and international community and use video making as a way to call for solutions.
Aim: creating social impact through video making.
Objectives: managing diverse teams with cultural differences; making videos using non-formal education and personal development methods.

Where will your project idea take place?

We want to engage organizations across Bulgaria focusing on small cities, towns, or rural areas.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

We will tackle the issues of minorities, local people, youth and foreigners that are not publicly visible, shared and resolved in and between the groups as they rarely interact.
Often people don’t step in open discussions. We offer an alternative - a digital skill workshop that includes community building elements, brings up social issues and creates a place for communication between diverse parts of society.
There are small, impactful organizations making a change in villages and communities in Bulgaria. These projects don’t get the visibility and support they deserve. They rely on volunteers and can't invest in experienced staff to create quality content. Our workshops are a way to gain skills, connections and teamwork experience.

Who are you doing it for?

Small impactful organizations, projects and initiatives around Bulgaria that aren’t visible or supported, and work with minorities, youth, people in rural areas. They will have the opportunity to network with other organizations and share good practices.
Local communities in these areas and the target audiences of these initiatives mentioned above.
Volunteers for these initiatives and projects.
Participants in our workshops.
Community of internationals in Bulgaria.
Ourselves and our team, to gain experience and knowledge, expand our horizons, make new connections.

How do you plan to get there?

1. Planning:
Create a map with the dates for visiting the areas.
Share the map on social media pages.
Contact partnering organizations.
Start a discussion, identify challenges.
Identify the solutions - open discussions, workshops, knowledge sharing.
Plan the action and follow-up phases including workshops.
Plan the visibility actions - documentary, visual outputs, identify the strategy.
2. Action:
Facilitate the workshop series.
Make short videos and a documentary with our video crew.
Screen the videos and hold an open discussion.
3. Visibility:
Film the initiative and people working on it.
Promote the organization through our channels.
4. Follow up:
Final event at each location - screen the videos with discussions.
Continue collaboration with partnering organizations.

What are the expected results?

Collaboration between the communities of our target towns and villages, collaboration between organizations, locals and marginal groups.
Participants of the workshops are able to voice the local social issues and make social promotional videos making an impact.
Community of foreigners in bigger cities is connected with the people in smaller regions.
One final event in each location - screening of the outcomes and an open discussion.
NGOs in Bulgaria collaborate with each other and support each other.
Organizations earn skills to produce good-quality promotional material for themselves.
8 days of workshops for up to 30 people per location.
4 videos per location and one final documentary by our filming crew.
A community-driven YouTube channel with the workshop outcomes.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The project promotes:
- Inclusion and cultural diversity in small local communities
- Addressing social issues in the communities
- Non-formal education methods
- Skills in social impact through video making
- Locals sharing their needs and difficulties they face
- The target groups will learn how to manage teams, how to overcome cultural differences, how to promote positive dialogue across groups with different ideas
- Foreigners feeling more integrated and welcome by the Bulgarians, and becoming active citizens by helping local projects
- Educating the locals about the skills they need in the digital age and thus building a bridge between the international community, volunteers, and Bulgarians.

Why is this idea important to you?

The Facebook group Foreigners in Sofia & Friends was founded in 2015 to help a small group of foreigners to connect in a new country. Now it has become a place to find support and sense of belonging for more than 27,000 people in Sofia, foreigners and Bulgarians.
With time it became clear that we could help the community by creating a platform that would answer their questions in a structured way. In 2019 we formed a group of determined people: developers, writers, editors, photographers, videographers co-creating the website, collecting the useful information to support foreigners.
We are an intercultural team of passionate Bulgarians and foreigners - example of positive impact, integration and multiculturalism. Open Sofia Foundation is an ambassador of positive impact in Bulgaria.
