Idea pitch

The goal is to help develop an environmentally conscious lifestyle. More and more people are asking what I can do to tackle the climate crisis. We present simplest everyday solutions with the help of a calendar and related applications. Our partners of an 8000+ member Facebook group have attracted individuals and local groups looking for practical solutions, e.g. a slide from PET bottles on neighbouring playground, use for soil improvement coffee grounds collected in households and restaurants.

Where will your project idea take place?

Bonyhád and its area, a small city of 14.000 inhabitants in Tolna county in South-Western Hungary.

What is the specific societal challenge faced by this region?

Bonyhád, Tolna county suffers from problems related to de-industrialization, collapse of previous employment forms. Lack of local jobs force young people to leave the region. Environmental damages caused in pre-1990 period remained non repared (former chemical plant in Hidas).Recently environmental awareness appeared primarily among younger people that we aim to strengthen in every generation. By combining “physical” calendars and “virtual” applications we aim at addressing simultaneously (grand)children - parents - grandparents. (Capitalize on the positive experience generated in digital education through involving into common activities grandchildren and grandparents.) Besides calendar and related applications we focus on organizing lectures for school children.

Who are you doing it for?

Our target group consists of mainly two types of people: 1/ individuals /communities aware of the current and upcoming climate challenges by making them ready to provide stronger contributions; 2/ people yet undecided whether they are willing and capable to participate in common efforts. The second group especially needs more help to get started with practical activities. The calendar and especially the related applications can (re-)generate their readiness and motivation to find and carry out practical steps in implementing locally circular economy efforts which can move our lives and the lives of our children in a positive direction. “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.”(@ZeroWasteChef, 2019)

How do you plan to get there?

We have designed the calendar and the specification of the primary applications, similar to more appropriate measurement of the environmental footprint of the users. With the Facebook group of 8000+ members we started to collect information on local initiatives.
Simultaneously continue the work on above describe local initiatives. We have contacted also local schools in order to identify teachers who are ready to cooperate in lectures for school children in summer schools and starting from September in the regular classes. We continue conversation with various local stakeholders to identify new initiatives, set up groups ready to contribute to their implementation. We intend to broaden with experienced project managers the currently three member group coordinating the project planning.

What are the expected results?

-5000 main users in the application in one year
- 500 calendars sold
- Purchase 10% more environmentally conscious products and services in
the next 12 months - Environmentally conscious initiative, campaign in the next 12 months
In one year we want to see more people choosing walking instead of a vehicle as a way to achieve their goals.

How does your idea strengthen active citizenship at a local and community level?

The proposed focus on elaborating, implementing and disseminating local solutions on global climate change related challenges we aim to empower local citizens and their communities. Their readiness and capacity to cooperate and network, share knowledge and experience in environmental issues enables them to identify local problems, elaborate and implement initiatives aiming to solve them. The experience gained in solving environmental challenges empowers local players to co-create and manage broader stakeholder collaboration also in other than environment related fields.

Why is this idea important to you?

As a mother and expectant mother, we consider the importance and almost a duty to raise our children on a more liveable planet. This is a matter of the heart in many ways.
We have tremendous empathy for both humanity and nature. For us, a state of flow means being able to do good things that are important to humanity, both to the community and to the individual. We spend a great deal of time on topics related to protecting our environment to evolve and create the best, most livable conditions for our families that are socially, ecologically and economically sustainable.
